Anelka and FA accept five-game ban

Posted in Sport with tags on March 14, 2014 by asotechm

West Brom’s Nicolas Anelka will serve his five-match ban after the Football Association and the striker both decided not to contest the decision. The Frenchman, 34, had seven days to appeal but that time has now lapsed. The FA had wanted a heavier sanction than an independent commission gave Anelka for his ‘quenelle’ gesture. However, it said in a statement on Thursday: “We do not consider there is a real prospect of successfully appealing to extend the sanction.”The FA’s director of football governance and regulation Darren Bailey added: “The grounds of appeal available to us are limited to legal challenges or to circumstances in which the sanction imposed is ‘so unduly lenient as to be unreasonable’.”The governing body also confirmed that Anelka himself has decided not to contest the independent regulatory commission’s punishment.”With confirmation that both parties will not be appealing, Nicolas Anelka will serve out his suspension during this season – we also welcome his confirmation the gesture will not be repeated,” Bailey continued. The Frenchman made the sign, which was described as “an aggravated breach” of FA rules by the commission, during a 3-3 Premier League draw with West Ham on 28 December. Anelka and his legal team had defended his actions to the FA’s independent regulatory commission hearing, saying the controversial gesture was in support of his friend, the French comedian Dieudonne M’bala M’bala.

Ronaldo Crowned World’s Richest Footballer [See Full List]

Posted in Sport with tags on March 11, 2014 by asotechm

Portuguese and Real Madrid star, Cristiano Ronaldo has overthrown Lionel Messi on the rankings of World’s Richest Footballer.

The Real Madrid megastar has an estimated wealth of £122million, according to the annual football Rich List compiled by Goal.com.

A lucrative new five-year contract worth £86.5million, signed with Real in September, means the Portuguese came in just ahead of Messi’s worth of £120.5million.

Ronaldo enjoyed a sensational 2013, scoring all four goals in a two-legged play-off with Sweden to guide his country to the World Cup finals. He has scored a phenomenal 42 goals in 33 matches for club and country this season as Real chase a Treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League.

In addition to his salary which pays £14.3million a year he has lucrative sponsorship deals with Nike, Armani, Castrol Edge, Jacob & Co, Herbalife, Banco Espirito Santo and KFC.

In 2013, Ronaldo launched his own line of underwear and even opened his own museum.

Because only current professionals count in the list, last year’s leader David Beckham drops out after announcing his retirement last May, allowing Ronaldo to claim top spot.

Messi had an up and down year by his standards – his salary of £12.3million was eclipsed by Ronaldo, he suffered a prolonged injury absence and he was forced to appear in court to testify over alleged tax fraud.

Top 10 List

1. Cristiano Ronaldo £122m

2. Lionel Messi £120.5m

3. Samuel Eto’o £70m

4. Wayne Rooney £69m

5. Kaka £67.5m

6. The Neymar family £66m

7. Ronaldinho £64m

8. Zlatan Ibrahimovic £57m

Moyes “Never Envisaged” a Difficult Start to United Reign- The Scots Letter to Fans

Posted in Sport with tags , , on March 7, 2014 by asotechm

Manchester United manager David Moyes has written an open letter to the club’s season ticket holders, thanking them for their unwavering support while also admitting he never foresaw a difficult season for the Premier League champions.

Moyes succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson, who ended his 26 years as United boss by winning a 13th league title, on 1 July.
However, United lie seventh after only 13 wins from 27 Premier League games.

“While I knew that this job would be a challenge when I took it on, the difficult season we have experienced was not something that I envisaged, which I am sure is the case as well for you supporters – and my players, staff and I am desperate to compensate for that,” Moyes said in the letter.

The Good Thing Moyes Did in His First Season at United Was Reaching the Champions League Last 16 With a Game to Spare, But Will It Last?

League defeats at the use-to-be-a-fortress Old Trafford by West Brom, Everton, Newcastle and Tottenham are part of eight game losses suffered in Moyes’ first reign in a disappointing season that has seen the side lose out of the FA Cup to Swansea and trail 2-0 in the round of 16 of the Uefa Champions League against Greek champions Olympiacos.

“You are accustomed to seeing a successful Manchester United and the backing you have given the players and me throughout the season has been incredible,” Moyes continued in his letter.

“Away from home the travelling fans have remained the best in the country, while at Old Trafford your unwavering faith has been noticeable and hugely welcomed.

“Supporting your team when they are winning is easy, but much harder when things are not going as well, and the loyalty you have shown us has been magnificent.

“I have absolutely no doubt we will see great winning sides here again.”

He said that United needed to transform “Old Trafford back into the fortress it has long been renowned as, and we will do everything in our power to get the positive performances and results to do that”.

Puyol Set To Leave Barcelona

Posted in Sport with tags , on March 5, 2014 by asotechm

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol, 35, has announced on Tuesday that he will leave the club at the end of the season after a decorated 15-year career at the Camp Nou.

Puyol, who did not reveal whether he will continue playing elsewhere, has been plagued by injuries over the last couple of seasons and has undergone three knee operations.

“At the end of the season I will leave FC Barcelona. The club are aware of this and we are in agreement,” he said.

“We will rescind the final two years of my contract that were still to run.”

Puyol signed a new deal with the club in January last year, but admitted in June that he would not stay if injuries continued to prevent him from playing a significant part on the field.

And having featured just 10 times this season in all competitions, he said it was time for a new challenge in a less physically demanding environment.

“After the last two operations it has been difficult for me to recover the level I need to be able to continue here, more than I expected and more than surgeons said. That is why I have taken this decision.”

Puyol didn’t reveal where he would go at the end of the current campaign and insisted he will give everything in what remains of the season to help Barca succeed on three fronts.

“I am not leaving today, there are still three months of the season remaining and those that know me know that I will not give up until the end. I will continue fighting to help the team improve and achieve our objectives this season.

“I don’t know what I will do on June 30. What I do know is that I will need time to rest. I have had four years without a break due to the injuries. That is what I will do and then we will see.”

The announcement brings to an end an extraordinary career in the Barcelona first team that began in 1999. Puyol is the club’s second most decorated player of all-time, behind only teammate Xavi Hernandez, having made 593 appearances.

After beginning life as a right-back, he was converted into one of the most successful centre-backs in world football over the past decade as he won three Champions Leagues and six La Liga titles with his boyhood club.

He was also a key part of the Spanish sides that won the European Championship in 2008 and the country’s first World Cup in 2010, memorably heading home the goal that took his side to the final in South Africa with a 1-0 win over Germany.

“Carles is an example for everyone on and off the field,” Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said on Tuesday.

In total he has represented Spain 100 times with his last appearance coming in a 3-1 friendly win over Uruguay in February 2013, making him one of only eight players to have won a century of caps with La Roja.

“He is a natural leader, a person that when you hear his name you think of Barcelona,” added former Barca midfielder Thiago Alcantara, now of Bayern Munich.

“In the time I was there he was a reference on an off the pitch. Everyone knows him and whilst Puyol is in the world of football, he will be an example for everyone.”

Posted in Sport with tags on March 5, 2014 by asotechm

Super Eagles Lead striker Emmanuel Emenike has said that he and the boys are raring to go and show what they are made of against Mexico on Wednessday.

While both teams are looking forward to use the game to ascertain their preparation for the upcoming FIFA world cup scheduled in Brazil, the Fenerbache based player says the boys will show what they can do come game day.

Both countries have met thrice before now at full international level with Mexico winning once at the King Fahd Cup (now the FIFA Confederations Cup) in January 1995.

They won 5-4 through penalties after the game ended 1-1.

The other two meetings were friendly games and both ended in 2-2 draws, in October 2007 and May 2012.

FIFA Authorize Veils, Turbans During Matches After Protest

Posted in Sport with tags on March 2, 2014 by asotechm

FIFA today has officially authorised the use of head covers for religious reasons during football matches for both male and female. It concluded today after a two-year trial proved that ‘wearing of head covers while playing competitive football posed too great a risk of injury to the head or neck’ as suggested by FIFA officials in 2012, proved not to be true. Iran’s women team protested for not being allowed to wear head scarves and withdrew from an Olympic qualification match against Jordan in 2011 while Canada also asked for the ban of head scarves and turbans to be lifted that same year. The decision was concluded today in Zurich after international Football Association Board members met.

The secretary general of FIFA, Jarome Valcke said: “It was decided that female players can cover their heads to play. Male players can play with head covers too. It will be a basic head cover and the colour should be the same as the team jersey” he said. The change will come into effect from June 1, 2014.

Put Olympiacos Loss Blame on Me- Moyes

Posted in Sport with tags , on February 26, 2014 by asotechm

Manchester United manager David Moyes has taken “responsibility” of Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to Olympiacos.

The Greek Super League champions will head to Old Trafford in three weeks’ time with a healthy advantage to protect and, even their opponents’ hot and cold form in the ongoing campaign offers them the opportunity to fancy a Champions League last-eight chances.

“I take responsibility, it’s my team and we have to play better,” said Moyes. “We can do, and the one thing is there’s still a second game to come.

Moyes Takes Responsibility of United’s 2-0 Loss in

“There is a second game and we will do all we can to turn it around.”

A dismal performance from the Premier League champions had them produce only one shot on target in the 89th minute, as Robin van Persie fired over after a useful cross from Chris Smalling, who was wonderfully redeployed to the right-back on the night.

United had far more of the ball than Olympiakos did, with 60.5% of possession, with 25.4% played in United’s attacking third… Opta Stats.

Many will question the exclusion of United’s teenage sensation Adnan Januzaj or the remarkable lack of drive and the numbers of turnovers managed by the visitors.

“We didn’t offer enough on the night to create a goal. They have a very good home record so it wasn’t unexpected.

That’s the worst we’ve played in Europe, we didn’t deserve to get anything,” Moyes added on his side’s inability to get a meaningful away goal.

“There is undoubtedly talent at Manchester United but we didn’t show it tonight. We are determined to put it right and we have the opportunity to do that.

“The players are hurting. Old Trafford has seen some great nights in the past and we hope to see another one.”

The last time United overturned a two-goal aggregate deficit in Europe was 30 years ago, when captain Bryan Robson led them to a 3-0 win over Barcelona at Old Trafford in the last eight of the now-defunct Cup Winners’ Cup.

Chelsea Set To Offload Mikel At The End Of The Season

Posted in Sport with tags , on February 23, 2014 by asotechm

John Mikel Obi’s days at Chelsea could be numbered as the club look set to offload the Nigeria international at the end of the season.

According to reports in England, Blues boss Jose Mourinho has informed Mikel he can leave the side for a small fee this summer.

The Premier League giants have already started looking for Mikel’s replacement, with Olympique Marseille’s Gianelli Imbula identified as a potential successor.

Mikel has become unsettled at Chelsea since the return of Mourinho to west London.

The midfielder, who was earlier linked with a move to Galatasary and AS Monaco, has fallen further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the January arrival of Nemanja Matic.
